Glucosamine Hydrochloride

Compounds related to cartilage, widely used in joint supplements, on limited and conflicting evidence.

Glucosamine and chondroitin are compounds related to the building blocks of cartilage. They’re among the most common ingredients in joint supplements and in foods for senior and large dogs.

A review of the research describes the evidence in dogs with arthritis as limited and conflicting, with few well-designed studies. Many foods add much less than the amounts studied as supplements, and the label often doesn’t state the amount. Glucosamine is generally well tolerated, but arthritis pain needs a veterinarian’s plan, and supplements don’t replace it.
