Pea Protein
Protein extracted from peas, used to raise the protein on a label.
Pea protein is what’s left when starch and fibre are removed from peas. It’s a concentrated source that raises a food’s protein figure, and it costs less than meat.
Its balance of amino acids is different from meat’s: lower in methionine and cysteine. So a high protein number doesn’t tell you where the protein comes from. Listing peas, pea protein and pea starch separately can also split one ingredient into three lower positions on the label. The FDA’s investigation of certain diets and canine heart disease is relevant here, and hasn’t established a cause.
