Calcium Carbonate

The common calcium source, the same mineral as limestone and chalk.

Calcium carbonate is a simple, cheap source of calcium, needed for bones, teeth, muscles and nerves. Meat is low in calcium, so foods need it added, usually with phosphorus in the right ratio.

The amount matters. Too much calcium is a known risk for large-breed puppies, whose bones can develop poorly, which is why nutrient profiles set a maximum for growth. That’s a reason not to add calcium to a complete food without advice from a veterinarian.

Also written as: Limestone, Ground Limestone.
