Sodium Tripolyphosphate
A phosphate salt used to hold moisture and texture, and on some dental foods.
Sodium phosphates hold water and improve texture in wet and meat-based foods, and they supply some phosphorus and sodium. Sodium tripolyphosphate and related phosphates also appear in some dental treats and kibbles. They bind calcium in saliva: in a study of Beagles, coating kibble or biscuits with sodium hexametaphosphate cut tartar formation by about 60 to 80%, though that shows what a coating can do, not what any one product does.
They add to a food’s total phosphorus, and the added forms are well absorbed. If your pet has kidney disease, that’s worth raising with your veterinarian.
